New Digs!

We’ve escaped our former-ammunition-warehouse-above-a-gun-shop-and-taboo-video-“offices!”

You can now visit the mobsters and our infamous Green Couch in the NEW secret HQ in lovely Fremont. (If you’ve got the secret password.) The new office boasts air conditioning, heat, a kitchen, janitorial services and all the other niceties that we did without for oh-so-long. On top of it all, since we’re not all in one room, people can actually concentrate! Chadwick is reporting a 37.8% increase in productivity. Look out world!

Thanks to David and everyone who made the move happen.

We’re on a Roll!

In the last three weeks, we’ve rolled out a bunch of new features and a major redesign, all of which I’d like to draw attention to.

PORTLAND & DENVER!

We’re finally branching out and covering more cities, starting with Portland and Denver. Seattleites, tell your Portlander and Denverite friends to go nuts! We’re looking to improve our coverage in those areas, so let us know what you’d like to see on our site for Denver and Portland.

ADD AN EVENT

Add EventThis is a big one and we think that we’ve got a damn good first iteration. Plug your event into our system and not only will your fans be able to track your event with our RSS and iCal feeds, but we’ll make sure that your event is also covered by the following:

If you got an event you’d like to promote, give it a try and let us know what you think. We want to be your one-stop-shop to promote your event.

EDIT AN EVENT/VENUE/ARTIST

Edit Event and Tell A FriendThe nature of events is very fluid. Lineups might change, the start-time will be pushed back, the location might move. Because of this, we’ve added the ability for any user to be able to edit an event, artist, or venue. If something is wrong, make it right.

TELL A FRIEND

We wanted a quick way for folks to be able to tell their friends the details of an event that they’re interested in. We’ve added the ability to use your address book from AOL, Outlook, Yahoo, GMail, Plaxo, and more.

WIDGET

Get WidgetWe’ve added the ability to build and place a widget of your events on pretty much any type of page: MySpace, Facebook, Blogger, TypePad, Wordpress, just using straight up html, and many more. Speaking of which…

FACEBOOK APP

Now you can grab your My Events RSS feed and plug it into your Facebook page. You can tell your friends what events you’re interested in attending. Bands, grab your artist RSS feed and your Facebook page will be populated with a list of your events.

USER COMMENTS PAGE

User CommentsWe’ve got a vibrant base of users posting comments on artists, events, and venues. Now if you click on their user name, you can see all their comments. If you see a comment with some good taste, you can see what else that user recommends (or tells you to stay away from). Also, you now can post your beautiful mug for your avatar in your account page.

SITE REFINEMENT

I can’t quite call it a redesign, but we’ve made some major refinements to the design. For those interested in the reasoning behind the changes, Designer Chris Brummel has written more about that here.

So there you go. And we’ve got lots more coming down the pipe. Make sure to let us know what you think of these features and what you’d like to see added.

Save Our Sonics

Categories: Steve, Uncategorized

I was lucky enough to be invited to watch last night’s Sonics game from courtside seats. Looking up at an NBA basketball player while the game is underway is pretty cool. Plus they pulled out a win to top it off!

But the seats and the win were gravy. A live event, the players giving a strong performance, the venue (mostly) full of people cheering — there’s something enduring and important about that. It’s about community. A shared interest and experience. And that’s true for just about all local events, whether it’s the Sonics, classical music, hip hop, art exhibits, theater, lectures, or a pillow fight.

That’s what makes cities vibrant. And that’s why Seattle should save the Sonics. It’s not the numbers. A raft of studies show that most claims about the direct financial benefits of pro sports teams to a city are inaccurate and wildly overstated. That’s true, but misses the point.

We humans are social creatures. Sports, like other events, are a part of the fabric of the community. Great communities attract great people. Great people build great businesses. And the cycle repeats, until you’ve got a group of guys willing to kick over $150 million to save the Sonics, which is the tipping point to make it work at a logical level.

So it doesn’t matter if you actually attend the games, just like it doesn’t matter if you go to events at Benaroya Hall, McCaw Hall or Town Hall. The fact is, their presence makes our community stronger. And maybe, one of these days, someone will invite you to an event you weren’t planning to attend. The options exist, as long as the players do.

Welcome Shilo!

Oops, this is a little late in posting, as anyone who’s seen the site or this blog has noticed that suddenly, someone hip is talking.

Yes, Shilo Urban is now on board full time as our Queen of Content. She’s out and about, and dishing out the best reviews and preview in the city. If you’ve seen her reviews, which range from BassNectar to Moliere, you’ll agree that not only does Shilo know what’s going on, but she knows how to bring it directly to you in your home, office, or local coffee shop.

Also, she’s not just writing. She’s playing an integral role in building out our content strategy. There are a ton of enthusiasts out there who have incredible things to share and want to let the world know about the great events they care about. If this fits your description, give Shilo a shout. We’re cooking up some great tools, and want to get them out “in the wild.”

Welcome Aboard, Shilo!

Insurance!

Yessir, the insurance cards arrived in the mail over the weekend. Full medical, dental and vision coverage for the whole company. Some would call this a luxury. I disagree. We cut corners elsewhere. Thanks to Pierard for making it happen.

Plus, the insurance actuaries think our company profile means we’re lower cost than the average. Do they know us? Half our guys ride bikes (motorized and not) into the office. Doesn’t matter. Try to stay in one piece, fellas. But whatever happens, we’ve got you covered!

Content Editor

Posted by Steve McCracken | Permalink | Comments (1)
Categories: Business, Steve

I recently got some grief for not mentioning that we’re hiring a Content Editor. (Well, yeah, that’s a good point…)

Here it is. We’re moving quickly on it, and getting close to a final decision. If you’re a late-inning entrant, better move quick!

CultureMob.com is your personalized guide for discovering great local events — music, movies, theater, and more. We provide personalized recommendations and are adding more rich content every day.

We’re looking for someone to take the lead on aggregating the best third party content (reviews, images, video etc.), writing original reviews and previews, leading our blog strategy and leading portions of our SEO outreach efforts.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Ability to rapidly produce great content with real personality. Seattle’s got personality. So do you.
  • Knowledge about and enthusiasm for local events of all types. If you’re idea of a happenin’ time is to sit on the La-Z-boy while watching bad TV, this probably isn’t right for you.
  • Extroverted. You need to be willing and enthusiastic about contacting tons of people, all the time.
  • Web-saavy. You’re more of a blogosphere/myspace/facebook/twitter/whatever2.0 junky than you should probably admit to.
  • Highly Organized. Self-motivated. Seriously, do you think I want to babysit someone? No. You understand the goals. You make it happen.

CultureMob is a startup that is backed by some of Seattle’s leading angel investors. We have fun, but we’re also serious about building a great company. If you’re not interested in going the extra mile, please don’t bother applying. (Just being candid, it benefits us all.)

If this sounds good to you. Please drop us a note. We’ll be even more impressed if you go to culturemob.com and put some comments in the system!

Thanks to Marcello Calbucci at Sampa for maintaining the Seattle Startup Index. This is a great resource. In January, Marcello noted that CultureMob was one of the “big movers,” moving up 51 positions during the month. Thanks for the mention!
