Black Friday After Thanksgiving Day Sales- Washington, D.C.

Everyone knows the Thanksgiving story of the pilgrims and the Mayflower, of the Native Americans and the corn planted with a dead fish; we all have heard about the shared dinner of wild turkey and harvest grains, the pumpkin pie milkshakes, Coca-Cola and the tall black hats with buckles, the long-running argument over “stuffing” vs. “dressing” between Goody Smith and Reverend John. America knows the story of the first Thanksgiving Day like we know how to draw a hand-outline turkey with orange and brown crayons. We know.
But have you heard the tale of the day AFTER the first Thanksgiving? Many people believe that the term was born out of the fact that Black Friday is the day that retailers finally get out of the red and into the black as far as revenue goes. But what REALLY happened is that Goody Smith and Reverend John decided that the festive colors of the holiday season were all too much fun and pleasure for the self-denying Puritans, and they went about the colony painting EVERYTHING black so that the fire-tone autumn leaves, red holly berries and bright orange pumpkins did not arouse any good feelings or excitement in the stoic Puritan community. They even painted the turkeys black and commanded that everything sold or given had to be black. But there was a backlash- a blacklash? The Pilgrims could deal with stodgy dresses and ugly shoes, but turning the whole WORLD black? The two anti-fun pioneers soon found themselves painted black with tar and feathers, the rest of the paint was removed and the colony continued on to Christmas with joy and the natural beauty of New England.

And thus one of our finer traditions was born: Black Friday, and to this very day many Americans go out shopping like mad the day after Thanksgiving, often buying black clothes and electronics just as our ancestors did so many years ago American shops, stores, and Walmart get in on the fun and host HUGE sales, the biggest all year, on all kinds of goody goods from American-made cotton underwear to lead-based toys from China.
